The Flagstaff Festival of Science turns the whole town into a classroom for about ten days each fall. It is one of the longest-running free science festivals in the country, and it fits Flagstaff perfectly — this is the world's first International Dark Sky City, with a deep scientific heritage that runs from Lowell Observatory to the U.S. Geological Survey.
Programming ranges widely and most of it is free: observatory open houses and star parties, guided nature walks, hands-on exhibits, and talks by working scientists. It is especially wonderful for families and curious kids, but there is plenty to draw in adults too.
Events happen at venues all over town, so it is easy to build a day or two around it from a Flagstaff rental. Check the festival's published schedule closer to the dates — popular open houses and talks can fill up, and evenings under those famously dark skies are the highlight.
