Flagstaff's historic downtown is the walkable heart of town, where century-old brick buildings line the original path of Route 66 — the Mother Road — beneath vintage neon signs. It grew up around the railroad, and trains still rumble through, giving the whole district a timeless, only-in-Flagstaff atmosphere.
Today those old storefronts are filled with local shops, breweries, cafes, and restaurants, and it is easy to lose an afternoon simply wandering from one to the next. The mix of railroad history, Route 66 nostalgia, and lively college-town energy makes it the natural first stop for getting your bearings.
From most Flagstaff rentals it is a quick trip in, and it works at any pace — a coffee and a browse, a long lunch, or an evening out. Park once and explore on foot; nearly everything worth seeing downtown sits within a few easy blocks.
