Just east of Flagstaff, Walnut Canyon National Monument protects a striking limestone gorge where the Sinagua people built cliff dwellings into the canyon walls some 800 years ago. It is one of the most atmospheric short outings in the region — a genuine walk into the past without a long drive.
The signature route is the Island Trail, which drops steeply from the visitor center and loops past dozens of these ancient rooms tucked beneath the overhangs. It is a paved but demanding path — a few hundred steps down and back up at around 6,600 feet — so take it slowly and give yourself time. For an easier option, the Rim Trail stays level and still offers wonderful canyon overlooks.
From a Flagstaff rental it is only a short drive, which makes it easy to pair with a morning in town or a stop on the way east. Bring water, wear sturdy shoes, and remember the elevation — the climb back up rewards a steady pace.
