The Mogollon Rim is the dramatic 2,000-foot escarpment that gives the White Mountains their edge — a geological wall running for hundreds of miles across Arizona, separating the high country from the land below. Overlooks along the Rim Road serve up some of the longest-distance views in the state, out over an endless sea of pines.
It's a landscape that changes with the seasons: cool and green in summer, spectacular in fall when the aspens turn gold, and often dusted with snow in winter. Pull-offs and Forest Service roads along the top make it easy to find a quiet overlook, and sunset from the edge is worth the timing.
From a Pinetop rental the Rim is a scenic drive rather than a quick hop, so treat it as a half-day outing. Bring layers and water, keep an eye on afternoon monsoon storms in mid-to-late summer, and take the dirt roads slow — the views reward an unhurried pace.
