Dining · Tucson
Barrio Bread is baker Don Guerra's celebrated bakery, and a big part of why Tucson earned its UNESCO City of Gastronomy title. Guerra won the James Beard Award for Outstanding Baker, working heritage and desert-adapted grains — like White Sonora wheat — into some of the finest sourdough in the Southwest.
The loaves have a devoted following, with a rotating selection of country breads, baguettes, and specialty bakes that reflect the region's grain history. It's as much a story about local agriculture as it is about bread — Guerra's community-supported model helped revive heritage grains across southern Arizona.
Popular items sell out, so go early in the day for the best selection. It's an easy stop from a central Tucson rental, and a fresh loaf makes a perfect anchor for a picnic before or after a desert hike.
