Sabino Canyon is the Santa Catalina foothills' most-loved desert escape, a stream-cut canyon on Tucson's northeast side where saguaro-covered slopes meet running water — a rare and lovely combination in the desert. It's part of the Coronado National Forest and laced with trails for every ability, from flat riverside strolls to serious climbs into the mountains.
A narrated shuttle tram runs up the paved canyon road, crossing the creek several times; a popular plan is to ride the tram to the top and walk back down, soaking in the views at your own pace. After summer monsoon rains the creek runs full and the swimming holes come alive. Keep an eye out for deer, javelina, and plenty of birds.
There's a parking fee (a federal recreation pass covers it), and the tram is a separate ticket well worth it in the heat. From most Tucson rentals it's a short drive northeast. Go early, bring water, and consider the tram up plus a walk down for the best of both.
