About the area
Scottsdale pairs Sonoran Desert scenery with a polished resort-town energy: championship golf, spa culture, a walkable Old Town, and a genuinely good food-and-nightlife scene, all under near-constant sun.
It suits a wide range of trips — golf groups and bachelorette weekends, snowbirds settling in for a month, and families splitting time between pools and desert trails. Winter and spring are the marquee seasons, anchored by spring training and a run of signature events.
Explore Scottsdale
Frank Lloyd Wright's winter home and desert laboratory, tucked into the McDowell foothills, is one of the best ways to understand how architecture and the Sonoran landscape can become one thing. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so book a guided tour ahead of your visit.
The walkable heart of the city, where the Arts District's galleries and the weekly ArtWalk sit steps from patio dining, boutiques, and that classic Old West storefront charm. It's my first suggestion for guests who want to leave the car parked and just wander.
More than 30,000 acres of protected desert laced with trails for every ability, from the easy loops at the Gateway Trailhead to the ridgeline climbs toward Tom's Thumb. Come at sunrise in the warmer months and carry more water than you think you need.
Just over the line in Papago Park, this is the finest place in the Valley to meet the desert's plant life up close, with towering cacti and agave along easy paved paths. Spring wildflowers and the seasonal evening light displays are worth timing your visit around.
The Valley's signature summit hike, straddling the Scottsdale–Phoenix line, with the steep Echo Canyon and Cholla trails rewarding you with a panoramic view over the whole basin. It's a genuine workout, so go early, and turning back partway is no failure on a hot day.
A well-maintained out-and-back trail in North Scottsdale that winds through boulder fields and towering saguaros with big views of the surrounding foothills and Troon. A favorite for a shorter desert walk that still feels like a real adventure.
After dark the blocks of Old Town come alive with rooftop lounges, craft-cocktail bars & high-energy clubs like Maya and Bottled Blonde. It's the Valley's go-to for a lively night out, all within an easy stroll of one another.
The Southwest's premier shopping destination gathers luxury houses, department-store anchors & buzzy restaurants under one roof. Even non-shoppers enjoy wandering between Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom & the center's rotating art and dining spots.
One of Scottsdale's most celebrated resort spas blends mineral-water therapy, a Himalayan salt room & desert-inspired treatments. It's a serene half-day escape when you want the pampering side of a Sonoran getaway.
Where to eat
A James Beard-recognized cornerstone of Old Town built around Arizona farms and an all-Arizona wine list. The seasonal vegetable dishes are legendary, so let the server steer you toward whatever came in that week.
Tucked inside the Bespoke Inn, this intimate Mediterranean spot from a James Beard-honored chef is one of Old Town's quiet treasures. The courtyard is a lovely place to settle in for a long, unhurried dinner.
Modern Latin cooking served in a dramatic candlelit room next to the historic Old Adobe Mission. Guests always mention the tableside guacamole and those addictive churros, so plan to share.
A lively, colorful celebration of regional Mexican cooking with a tequila list that goes on for pages. Our go-to when guests want authentic flavors and a festive Old Town atmosphere.
A warm gastropub where elevated comfort food meets a serious cocktail program. Ask about the Original Chopped Salad, which developed a cult following for good reason.
A pink-walled Old Town institution serving sundaes and classic American fare from the same soda-fountain counter since the 1950s. Pure nostalgia and a guaranteed hit with kids after a warm afternoon.
Plan ahead
Each January, WestWorld of Scottsdale fills with thousands of collector and dream cars for one of the world's premier auto auctions. Even if you're not bidding, the spectacle of the crossing-the-block action is worth the trip.
A February tradition at WestWorld drawing thousands of the world's finest Arabian horses along with shopping, food, and family-friendly events. A distinctly Scottsdale happening locals have looked forward to for decades.
Held each winter at TPC Scottsdale, "The People's Open" is famous for its raucous stadium-style 16th hole and record-setting crowds. The most electric golf tournament on the PGA Tour and a full-blown social event for the whole Valley.
Every fall the Scottsdale Waterfront lights up with large-scale interactive art installations, live performances, and nightly programming along the Arizona Canal. Free to wander and best enjoyed after dark when the installations glow.
